We are proud to announce the successful launch of Georgia State University’s new institutional repository on Open Repository. The project included a full migration from Digital Commons, involving a total of 15,351 items, and marks a major step forward in the university’s commitment to open access, scholarly visibility, and digital preservation. Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia State University is a leading public research institution, recognized for its innovation, diversity, and commitment to student success. With more than 50,000 students and a dynamic research community, the university is one of the most prominent urban research universities in the United States.

Digital Commons migration

Georgia State University successfully transitioned from its legacy Digital Commons platform to a new Open Repository. This migration ensured that all existing collections, publications, and metadata were seamlessly transferred, preserving the university’s scholarly record while opening the door to enhanced flexibility and support.

By moving from Digital Commons to Open Repository, Georgia State gains the benefits of a community-driven, open-source DSpace foundation combined with the tailored services, hosting, and support provided by Atmire.

We are excited to move to this new, modern platform. Having an open system that integrates well with other systems like ORCiD, is easy to configure, and has a global community is a crucial step forward for our institutional repository. We look forward to continuing to grow our ScholarWorks repository on the Atmire Open Repository system.

DOI minting

As part of the new Open Repository platform, Georgia State University now benefits from seamless DOI (Digital Object Identifier) integration. This ensures that every publication can be assigned a persistent, globally recognized identifier, making the university’s research outputs easier to discover, cite, and track.

SSO integration

The new Open Repository also introduces Single Sign-On (SSO) integration, giving Georgia State’s community a seamless and secure login experience. Faculty, students, and staff can now access the repository using their existing institutional credentials, reducing barriers to use while ensuring compliance with university security standards.

Conclusion

By combining DOI, ORCID, and SSO integrations, Georgia State University’s new Open Repository creates a modern, researcher-friendly environment that streamlines participation and maximizes impact. These integrations ensure that scholarship is more visible, more accessible, and more securely managed, while reducing administrative burden for faculty and students alike. With Open Repository, Georgia State is positioned at the forefront of digital scholarship, empowering its community to share and showcase research with confidence on a global stage.
