As the flagship research university of the state, the University of Kansas (KU) is a member of the Association of American Universities and consistently ranks among the top public research institutions in the United States. With a strong emphasis on academic excellence, innovation, and public service, KU supports a vibrant community of scholars and researchers across multiple campuses.
From an in-house DSpace to a hosted DSpace
KU previously managed its institutional repository on a locally hosted DSpace instance, maintained in-house by university staff. While this setup gave KU full control, it also came with considerable maintenance and support demands.
To ensure long-term sustainability, scalability, and professional support, KU made the strategic decision to migrate to Open Repository, Atmire’s hosted DSpace solution. With Open Repository, the University benefits from guaranteed uptime, technical support, regular upgrades, and new features, freeing up internal resources and increasing the focus on content curation and outreach.
“As the institutional repository of the University of Kansas, KU ScholarWorks is vital to the implementation of KU’s Faculty Open Access policy. We rely on Atmire to provide support that ensures maximum access to the outstanding scholarly research in the repository.”

Seamless SSO integration
As part of the setup, Atmire worked with KU to implement Single Sign-On (SSO) authentication, allowing university staff and researchers to securely access the repository using their existing institutional credentials. This ensures both convenience and enhanced security, while simplifying user management for administrators.
Empowered by statistics
To support data-driven decision-making and improve repository engagement, KU has also activated Atmire’s Usage Analysis module. This powerful feature provides detailed statistics and visual insights into how content is accessed, who is using the repository, and what trends are emerging, offering valuable input for library services, research impact assessments, and institutional reporting.
We are thrilled to support the University of Kansas in its mission to make research and scholarship openly accessible. With Open Repository, KU is now equipped with a robust, scalable platform and professional support to take its repository to the next level.
